Het Fioretti Project (English)

Lucinda Ra

Seven Flemish theatre makers and musicians sought temporary accommodation at Fioretti, the children's ward of the Dr. Guislain psychiatric institution in Gent. The children and young adults residing in Fioretti struggle with combinations of mental challenges and psychological problems, often related to difficult circumstances at home. They join the children on a quest to find answers to a number of questions: what is civilisation? What is savage? When is a child a wild child? Why does the outside world refuse to accept these children? What are their fears?

In addition to the above, the makers of this performance drew their inspiration from the characters the wild men, dominating the carnivals celebrated throughout Europe.

The Fioretti Project bears the promise of a musical and documentary tale brimming with characters, objects, and lavish costumes. A story situated between the reality of a closed psychiatry ward on one side, and the imagination of children and makers on the other.

Het Fioretti Project is a co-production realised between Lucinda Ra, arts centre De Werf in Bruges, arts workshop Scheld’apen in Antwerpen, De Vooruit in Gent, arts workshop Buda in Kortrijk and Feikes Huis in Amsterdam.
