Charles Pas
Charles Pas (Antwerp, 1998 / Mime ATD 2020) is an Amsterdam-based maker with Flemish flair and international ambition and potential. As a performer he has worked with, among others, Julian Hetzel, Francesca Lazzeri, Char Li Chung, and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. After graduating he began directing intensively while continuing to perform in his own work, including the solo Victory Boogie Woogie (2022).
In 2020 Charles received the 3Package Deal from AFK, and in 2024 the PrixFintroPrijs for emerging talent in Belgium. In 2022 he founded Studio FCP together with business director Ada de Mol van Otterloo, a low-threshold development space for young makers.
Charles combines burning urgency with drive and eagerness to learn. He throws himself, literally and figuratively, onto the stage, disregards genre, and moves seamlessly between disciplines with an urgency immediately felt throughout the auditorium. The spectator becomes part of a fragile, sensory perception that exists only in that moment.
Charles Pas: “I create in order to reflect on my life and the lives of those around me. With elements from our reality I make something new, so that in my dramatic world I can defy existing spatial and cultural boundaries.”
“No one is born with equal opportunities. Everyone must find their own way. That involves both pain and joy. I work with (personal) fear, trauma, and inequality. Deep inside I am afraid I will never truly connect with my fellow human beings, or that through my own mistakes I will lose someone I love. Creating performances is my ultimate attempt to understand that fear. I hope that people—by seeing how bad things can get—will actively decide to choose the good. By imagining what I abhor, I aim toward hope.”
